Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 45500
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Albert A. Horton (MCSN: 362863), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 14 March 1943. Upon learning the location of wounded men whom the litter teams could not reach, Corporal Horton took a litter, advanced through enemy fire to the casualties and, obtaining the aid of a slightly injured rifleman, began evacuating the men to an area where the litter team could receive them. In order to evacuate all the seriously wounded men, he made several trips over this same area which was heavily covered by enemy sniper and mortar fire and, by his quick action in moving forward to pick up these men, contributed materially to the saving of their lives. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
