CITATION:
(UNCONFIRMED - Citation Needed): John E. Rice, United States Army, is reported to have been awarded the Silver Star under the below-listed General Orders for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the Hq Company, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Infantry, 36th Infantry Division on 5 May 1945 in Austria.

Pfc Rice was killed by enemy fire just 15 minutes before his company received "cease-fire" orders ending the war in Europe.
