David C. Rawls
Captain, U. S. Army Air Forces
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, General Orders No. 18 (1942)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) David C. Rawls, United States Army Air Forces, for conspicuous bravery, coolness and expert handling of his airplane while serving with the 18th Reconnaissance Squadron (Heavy), during the Japanese aerial attack on Hickam Field, Territory of Hawaii, on 7 December 1941.
On approaching his destination, Captain Rawls found his landing fields under enemy attack, was mistaken for an enemy plane by anti-aircraft batteries, and was attacked by two Japanese pursuit planes. When he ran out of ammunition and his fuel supply was extremely low, Captain Rawls, despite the anti-aircraft fire and enemy attacks, made a successful landing, saving his plane and crew.
His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Air Forces.
