Kenneth P. Berry
Chief Quartermaster, U. S. Navy
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief Atlantic: Serial 00483 (April 4, 1943)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Quartermaster Kenneth P. Berry (NSN: 2068933), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while attached to the U.S.S. BERNADOU (DD-153) during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco from 8 November 1942 to 11 November 1942.
Chief Berry was helmsman of the U.S.S. BERNADOU when she entered the harbor of Safi in darkness on 8 November 1942, in order to land Army assault troops at the dock. With courage, coolness, and alertness he steered the ship during heavy gunfire, at night and in restricted and unfamiliar waters. His expert performance of duty assisted materially in the successful accomplishment of the U.S.S. BERNADOU's mission.
The courage, skill, and coolness under fire displayed by Chief Quartermaster Berry were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
