George Perkins
Private 1st Class, U. S. Army
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George Perkins, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany.
On 3 January 1945, Private First Class Perkins was acting first scout of the first squadron of the Third Platoon with the 38th Infantry Regiment. Its mission was to engage enemy positions south of Wirzfeld, Belgium. After crossing the main line of resistance, Private First Class Perkins located an enemy outpost, crept over the ground in cover of a hedge fence, surprised and killed the lone enemy occupant, thus enabling the patrol to move forward without detection. A short time later he was the first man to locate an enemy strong point that offered determined resistance to the advance. In the initial assault on the enemy position by the first squad, Private First Class Perkins, in the vanguard of the attack, materially assisted in clearing out two dugouts, resulting in the killing of one German and the capture of four. Although wounded, Private First Class Perkins continued in the fighting against other positions until ordered to the rear for treatment, but about an hour later he returned to the patrol of his own volition. The daring and resourcefulness of this enlisted man materially aided in the success of the patrol's actions.
The gallantry, bravery and disregard for personal safety displayed by him reflect the highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
