Trinidad C. Herrera
1st Sergeant, U. S. Army
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (December 7, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Trinidad C. Herrera (ASN: 38113351), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 10 to 12 October 1944 in France. During this period, Staff Sergeant Herrera was serving with an anti-tank squad attached to a rifle company. Despite the heavy enemy mortar, artillery, and sniper fire, Staff Sergeant Herrera risked his life to secure food and water for the benefit of his men who were forced to remain in their foxholes. Again during this period when ammunition supplies were detonated by enemy artillery, resulting in a fire at night, Staff Sergeant Herrera prevented the flames from being seen by the enemy by quickly extinguishing the blaze despite the danger to himself. Later during this period, when his platoon was being harassed by an enemy machine gun, Staff Sergeant Herrera deliberately drew fire upon himself and successfully exposed the enemy position to enable his comrades to destroy it. The unusual fortitude, personal bravery, and loyal devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Herrera were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
