CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Otto M. Lambert (ASN: 0-1059520), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division.
On 9 January 1945, at Hatten, France, Lieutenant Lambert controlled the fire of his machine gun section and adjusted mortar and artillery fire as close as thirty yards to his position. When it became apparent that the Germans were over-running the entire line, he directed the withdrawal of his section and then returned to his platoon CP and though exposed to enemy fire, disregarded his own safety by taking the telephone in the middle of the street where he had the best observation and continued to adjust artillery fire. As a result of his action, the enemy assault was slowed until a counter attack could be launched.
Lieutenant Lambert was reported missing in action.
