GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 269 (June 19, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert E. Hudson (ASN: 34823672), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Helebach, Germany.
During an attack, Company C was pinned down by fire from two enemy machine guns. Private First Class Hudson, the lead scout, continued to move forward, firing his rifle at the first machine gun. About twenty-five yards from the enemy position he was forced to take cover in a ditch, but continued forward until he was within five yards of the enemy gun. From this position he threw two hand grenades, killing the members of the first gun crew. He then opened fire with his rifle on the second gun and succeeded in keeping the gunners pinned down until the company could reach cover in a nearby woods and continue its mission.
Private First Class Hudson's magnificent courage and devotion to duty in the face of enemy fire are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
