CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Doyle E. Davis (ASN: 0-1185676), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 183d Field Artillery Group, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 9 April 1945, in Germany.
Lieutenant Davis performed outstanding work as Liaison Pilot to the 183d Field Artillery group during the attack on Goberg, southeast of Hildburghauson, Germany. Lieutenant Davis flew twenty-five miles into enemy territory making reconnaissance for routes to be used by CCA, 11th Armored Division. Enemy road blocks and gun positions were reported.
For more than one hour he was subjected to enemy fire. His daring performance, coolness, bravery, and utter disregard for his own personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
