CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant T. J. Cunningham (ASN: 38473846), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division on Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 6 December 1944.
During an attack against the enemy, Sergeant Cunningham moved forward in the face of intense hostile fire to an extremely exposed forward position and rescued a wounded comrade. In the performance of this heroic deed, Sergeant Cunningham was wounded.
His daring initiative and high sense of loyalty to his fellow soldiers were an inspiration to his unit and exemplify the finest traditions of the military service.
