CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Cad E. Butler (ASN: 6277755), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Observation Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 11 December 1944, in France.
Braving intense mortar and artillery shellfire, Staff Sergeant Butler led aid men and litter bearers to treat and evacuate an American officer and 14 soldiers who had been without assistance for 3 1/2 hours. Staff Sergeant Butler displayed exemplary leadership and personal courage of the highest type in order to save their lives and render aid to his comrades. In addition, Staff Sergeant Butler continued his mission of installing communications to an OP, disregarding the peril of the shelling encountered.
The bravery and leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
