CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Marlin A. Bell (ASN: 37633681), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 7 April 1945, in the vicinity of Kressbach, Germany.
When his platoon was pinned down by machine gun fire, Private First Class Bell crawled forward with his BAR and silenced one of the enemy machine guns. His gallant action permitted his platoon to withdraw to secure a better route and successfully complete its mission. Private First Class Bell was killed while performing this courageous act.
The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Private First Class Bell reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
