Marlyn Wayne Caraway
Sergeant, U. S. Army
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 183 (November 20, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Marlyn W. Caraway (ASN: 38341778), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Americal Division during the second battle of Torokina on Bougainville, Solomon Islands, during World War II. The flame thrower squad was pinned down by heavy enemy fire from a pillbox, and Private Caraway immediately and without orders, rushed forward and began firing his rifle into the pillbox, thereby causing the enemy to direct fire at him and enable the flame thrower squad to move forward and destroy the emplacement. With the bullets coming in six directions around him, Private Caraway was compelled to hug the ground. An enemy grenade hit close to him and he was wounded in the hand. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
