John B. Smith
Major, U. S. Army
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
War Department, General Orders No. 60 (June 26, 1946)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) John B. Smith (ASN: 0-349344), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company B, 45th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, in action at Mt. Mataan, Philippine Islands, from 18 to 22 January 1942. Charged with the seizure of Mt. Mataan and knowing its approaches were in enemy hands, Major Smith courageously and skillfully conducted a march thereto. His unit repulsed repeated attacks from front, flank, and rear, and, though wounded, he heroically directed a successful retirement. Major Smith's accomplishment contributed materially to protecting the flank of a Philippine division. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
