Technical Sergeant, U. S. Army

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 345 (July 10, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Edward K. Lewis (ASN: 6951306), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ommersheim, Germany.
As the leader of an assault team, Sergeant Lewis worked his way under intense enemy fire to a communication trench between two enemy-held pillboxes. After reaching this position he observed twenty-five enemy soldiers attempting to flank his company's exposed right flank. He immediately left his position and rant to intercept them. When the enemy were within fifteen yards of him, he threw several grenades and rapidly fired his rifle at them, killing five, wounding three, and routing the remainder. Sergeant Lewis' gallantry in action is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
