CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) Samuel Mason Hogan (ASN: 0-21094), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of a Battalion of the 33d Armored Regiment, 3d Armored Division, in action on 4 August 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Hogan, commanding a combat force with the mission of seizing and holding a key town, personally led his forces forward and inflicted heavy personnel and tank casualties on the enemy. Through his superior leadership and complete disregard for his own personal safety, his forces held this position in the face of heavy enemy fire of all types and halted a ferocious enemy counterattack. His personal leadership in this forward position accounted for the successful accomplishment of the mission with maximum casualties to the enemy and minimum losses to his own forces. Lieutenant Colonel Hogan's superior leadership, determination, and complete devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
