Wayne Meredith Harris, Sr.
Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. Army
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 219 (March 7, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Wayne M. Harris (ASN: 0-328611), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 343d Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in action from 4 to 8 December 1944 in the vicinity of Elmersdorf and Buren, Germany.
During the Saar River operations, Major Harris was in command of two field artillery sections which were attached to his battalion. On many occasions, he, at risk of his life, made personal reconnaissance over heavily mined areas in full view of the enemy to locate new gun sites and direct fire on hostile positions. During an infantry attack on the town, he, despite intense shelling, directed accurate support artillery registrations on the enemy, destroying eleven targets in one day. His gallantry contributed immeasurably to the success of the operation and was in accordance with high military tradition.
