Major, U. S. Army

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 60 (November 30, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Hubert S. Bass (ASN: 0-329439), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 September 1944 at ****, Holland.
Major Bass, Executive Officer, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, led a column of parachutists from the Drop Zone towards a prominent observatory tower, where the battalion commander had directed assembly of the battalion.
As Major Bass neared this point, it became apparent that it was a flak tower from which the enemy had with depressed 20-mm. flak guns killed and wounded men of the battalion as they approached. The position also contained automatic weapons and riflemen. Major Bass immediately led a small group forward to remove this obstacle.
Concentrated enemy fire was brought to bear on this small force and caused some casualties.
At great risk to himself, Major Bass led these men into positions from which they succeeded in knocking the tower out with bazooka and small arms fire and killed or captured all the occupants.
Against an enemy force which had definite fire superiority, Major Bass displayed complete disregard for his own personal safety and moved around as he directed the fire of his men.
As a result of this action, the lives of many men were saved and his quick success facilitated reorganization of the battalion and the accomplishment of its mission.
