GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander Naval Forces Europe: Serial 7760 (September 9, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Roy F. Beery, Jr. (NSN: 0-174314), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity and marked devotion to duty as Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer attached to the Sixteenth Regimental Combat Team, 1st U.S. Infantry Division, during the assault on the coast of Normandy, France, 6 June 1944, and subsequent advance inland 6 June to 15 June 1944.
Landing under intense enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Beery went forward with the assault troops with little regard for his personal safety, called for and directed Naval Gunfire on enemy installations with great skill and accuracy, thereby contributing valuable support to Allied troops during their advance over the beachheads. He displayed marked bravery and great knowledge of his profession in calling for and adjusting fire which aided materially in the advance on and capture of Surain. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
