CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas C. Windsor (MCSN: 488271), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Amphibian Tractor Battalion, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 20 February 1945.
While carrying a load of barbed wire in an amphibian tractor to supply front line units, Private First Class Windsor braved heavy mortar fire while traveling through an area known to contain land mines.
Under intense enemy fire, he crawled in front of the vehicle, probing and searching for mines and despite the numerous hazards, succeeded in delivering his cargo at a time when it was vitally needed.
His outstanding leadership, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
