CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Doyle E. Wilson (MCSN: 820454), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of the Air Liaison Team of the Second Joint Assault Signal Company, Fifth Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands on 15 June 1944.
After landing on the beach and becoming separated from his air liaison team while looking for team equipment, Private First Class Wilson advanced alone through a fire trench and encountered a Japanese soldier whom he killed in hand to hand fight.
Then starting across an airstrip he picked up a submachine gun, killed eight enemy soldiers and while attempting to induce other Japanese to surrender sustained a severe wound in his shoulder.
After holding his position for nearly two hours until his shoulder and arm became useless due to stiffness he started to retire across the airfield where he was shot again through the side and before being evacuated sustained another wound from the explosion of an artillery shell.
His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Killed in an on the job accident at the Texas Company, Port Arthur, Texas on 26 July 1946.
