Corporal, U. S. Marine Corps

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 6068
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lew E. Weber (MCSN: 520963), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while service as a Member of a Machine Gun Squad of Company K, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands on 17 June 1944.
When an enemy tank broke through the front lines and delivered heavy fire into his company's command post and mortar positions, Private First Class Weber voluntarily moved forward into the path of the oncoming tank and, despite heavy machine gun fire, scored hits on the vehicle with anti-tank grenades.
Although he was in open level terrain without cover, he held his ground until assisted by heavier weapons which destroyed the tank. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Weber and the United States Naval Service.
