Hulen Leroy Stromquist

2nd Lieutenant, U. S. Marine Corps

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 2942 (March 29, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Hulen L. Stromquist (MCSN: 0-23703), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Artillery Forward Observer attached to the First Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during the assault and occupation of enemy Japanese-held Saipan Island in the Marianas from 15 to 30 June 1944.
Landing on the fireswept beaches on D-Day with his rifle company, Second Lieutenant Stromquist persistently sought out strategic observation positions in advance of our lines despite the deadly unceasing barrages from powerful Japanese gun emplacements and, skillfully controlling the fire of his batteries, materially aided the infantry troops in breaking down stubborn enemy resistance.
Manning a forward observation post ahead of the front lines on 21 June, he directed accurate artillery fire on hostile activities at Garapan, holding indomitably to his exposed position in the face of a sudden concentration of mortar fire which inflicted serious casualties on our troops and forced the withdrawal of three other teams.
By his constant vigilance, unfaltering technical ability and cool courage during this period of bitter hostilities, Second Lieutenant Stromquist contributed materially to the ultimate conquest of this vital Japanese stronghold, and his valiant conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Killed In Action 31 July 1944 Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.
