Private 1st Class, U. S. Marine Corps

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 34902 (September 27, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Allen H. Strasburger (MCSN: 512827), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Runner, serving with Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 7 March 1945.
Performing his hazardous duties with enthusiastic devotion, Private First Class Strasburger made countless trips under the fiercest enemy fire to contact the squads, sometimes when they were pinned down by the intense hostile barrage, bringing accurate reports back to his commanding officer.
Wounded and evacuated to a hospital ship, he left without orders, returning to his platoon in the front lines and remaining with it against the advice of a medical officer.
Under close and accurate enemy rifle, machine-gun and hand grenade fire, he volunteered to direct the litter teams carrying out the many casualties and personally braved the fire to bring smoke grenades from back of the lines to cover the evacuation of the wounded.
Fatally wounded on the last of the voluntary trips forward to aid wounded comrades who otherwise might have perished, Private First Class Strasburger, by his indomitable fighting spirit, unflinching courage and valiant devotion to duty in the face of extreme peril upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
