Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 9241
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class T. D. Stevens, Jr. (MCSN: 497084), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of an Assault Engineer Platoon of Company B, First Battalion, Eighteenth Marines (Engineer), SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tinian, Marianas Islands, 2 August 1944.
When his command post was attacked in the rear by hostile forces, Private First Class Stevens armed himself with an automatic rifle and, proceeding into a hazardous, exposed area, steadfastly directed his fire against the attacking enemy forces, continuing in his courageous efforts until his supply of ammunition was depleted.
Then, unarmed, he crawled forward in the face of intense hostile machine-gun and rifle fire to administer first aid to a wounded comrade and subsequently succeeded in evacuating him to a place of comparative safety. By his heroic efforts and concern for the welfare of others, Private First Class Stevens upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
