Bruce Redman
Sergeant, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 0647
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Bruce Redman (MCSN: 282126), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, on 20 November 1943.
After landing operations on D-Day, Platoon Sergeant Redman was assigned with his 18 man unit to cover a demolition crew attempting to wipe out a series of Japanese pillboxes. Unhesitatingly leading his men through an open fire-swept area to an advantageous striking position, he personally directed them in delivering a relentless barrage.
With the demolition crew pinned down by shattering machine-gun and grenade fire directly to their front, he courageously pressed forward, charged the emplacement with grenades and silenced the enemy fire. Repeatedly making a target of himself to locate well-concealed entrenchments, he continued his same daring tactics until seriously wounded while repairing the weapon of one of his men in a dangerous front-line area.
His inspiring leadership, daring initiative, and indomitable fighting spirit maintained throughout the bitter hostilities contributed materially to the success of the operation and reflect great credit upon Sergeant Redman and the United States Naval Service.
