Silver Star

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Horace W. Parr (MCSN: 439271), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Marianas Islands on 2 August 1944.
One of the first to observe the approach of the Japanese when a force of approximately one hundred and fifty attacked his battalion command post at dawn, Corporal Parr immediately delivered a heavy and accurate volume of fire from his Browning automatic rifle and by his devastating, well directed bursts killed a large number and temporarily disorganized their assault.
Despite terrific enemy machine gun and rifle fire, Corporal Parr valiantly continued to man his weapon with outstanding effectiveness until he fell mortally wounded
By his daring initiative and cool courage in the face of peril, Corporal Parr contributed immeasurably to the successful defense of the command post and to the saving of many men and his heroic devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
