Julian Haney Myrick
Sergeant, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 12081
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Julian H. Myrick (MCSN: 439492), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Tank Commander, while serving with Company B, Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Marianas Islands, on 31 July 1944.
A skilled and aggressive leader throughout, Platoon Sergeant Myrick capably assisted another tank in supporting vital infantry operations in a deep terrain area overrun with matted sugar cane and numerous mines.
When in a cleared section the accompanying infantry commander held up the advance to reorganize his company, Platoon Sergeant Myrick boldly held his extremely vulnerable position during a desperate hostile counterattack despite lack of adequate cover space and shortage of heavy caliber ammunition and, by his outstanding daring and perseverance, aided the other tank in successfully breaking up the smashing Japanese assault and killing approximately two hundred of the enemy.
His indomitable courage, relentless fighting spirit and superb devotion to duty throughout this extremely hazardous action reflect the highest credit upon Platoon Sergeant Myrick and the United States Naval Service.
