Charles O. Moyer
Captain, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Charles O. Moyer (MCSN: 0-8840), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the First Battalion, Eleventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on December 26, 1943.
Courageously leading a patrol from his artillery battalion against hostile units fighting desperately to defend their position, Captain Moyer skillfully routed the enemy, killing five Japanese before he, himself, was fatally wounded.
By his daring initiative and inspiring leadership, he enabled the men in his battalion to occupy the hostile emplacement and subsequently to furnish effective fire support for our advancing infantry forces.
Captain Moyer's aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
