CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Irwin L. Miller (MCSN: 491249), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during combat against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on 26 December 1943.
Carrying out a hazardous mission as a platoon scout, Private First Class Miller unhesitatingly made his way forward in the face of intense hostile fire in a valiant attempt to locate well-concealed enemy pillboxes in the dense jungle undergrowth, courageously maintaining his exposed position until he was fatally wounded.
Private First Class Miller's daring initiative and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
