Private, U. S. Marine Corps

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, United States Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 47 (February 22, 1943)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private Hulon L. Massey (MCSN: 379351), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action on January 23, 1943, at Guadalcanal.
Attached to a Weapons Company with a reinforced Marine regiment, Private Massey's duty was distributing ammunitions during the advance, when an enemy machine gun opened fire from a ridge to the front and caught reserve units and demolitions in its field of fire.
Several wounded personnel were lying in the path of the fire while others were attempting to drag themselves from it. When a pharmacist's mate was hit, Private Massey took the hospital kit and administered aid with utter disregard for his own safety. After resuming his regular duties he was wounded in the left shoulder.
