GENERAL ORDERS:
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Rondell Lyons (MCSN: 267037), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the Second Battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 10 November 1942.
During an engagement in the Matanikau and Poa Rivers Area, Private First Class Lyons led his squad through heavy hostile machine gun fire in order to reach his position. Later, with cool courage and utter disregard for his own personal safety, he crossed a grassy knoll which was dangerously exposed; twice to rescue wounded comrades and a third time to carry water to them from a hole which was under continuous Japanese fire. His heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
