Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 43822
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John S. Lissner (MCSN: 331634), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Demolitions Squad Leader of the Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 1 March 1945.
Participating in an attack against a strong enemy force entrenched on a ridge honeycombed with caves, Corporal Lissner led his demolition squad through difficult terrain under intense hostile fire. He then proceeded to blow up five caves from which enemy fire was being placed upon our lines, thereby enabling the company to continue the attack and gain the top of the ridge. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
