CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal David W. King, Jr. (MCSN: 476153), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Radio Mechanic of Amphibian Tractors of Company B, Eighth Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Third Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 16 September 1944.
Volunteering to perform a hazardous demolition mission, Corporal King braved heavy hostile fire to accompany the demolition party to the Japanese pillboxes and caves selected as the objective. Working his way forward, he set the charge and successfully accomplished his task. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
