GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 07574 (January 11, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert W. Johnson, Jr. (MCSN: 546977), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while acting as a Stretcher Bearer serving with the First Service Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Peleliu, Palau Islands, from 15 to 20 September 1944.
Working tirelessly and with cool courage throughout the fierce action, Private First Class Johnson repeatedly exposed himself to withering, intense rifle and machine-gun fire to carry his wounded comrades from the battle area and voluntarily led evacuation parties across fire-swept ridges back to the front lines until he was mortally wounded by a bursting hostile mortar shell while preparing to evacuate additional casualties.
By his resolute fortitude and indomitable fighting spirit, Private First Class Johnson contributed to the saving of many lives, and his valiant devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
