Private, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander 7th Fleet: Serial 0939 (September 9, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Carl Holder, Jr. (MCSN: 866703), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving at an advanced outpost in the defensive installations of a company in the Second Battalion, Reinforced, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division near the enemy held village of Sumeru, New Britain, the early morning of December 30, 1943.
After warning his company of a hostile force about to assault our lines, Private Holder immediately returned to his post and boldly engaged the enemy in hand to hand combat for three perilous hours until he was seriously wounded and forced to discontinue the fight. Private holder's daring initiative, courageous efforts and heroic devotion to duty with complete disregard for his own personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
