CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George E. Hallmark (MCSN: 321907), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Half Track Crew of Weapons Company, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands on 8 July 1944.
When four machine guns of a rifle company had been put out of action by hostile fire, Corporal Hallmark immediately volunteered to remove a machine gun from his half-track to reinforce the depleted company lines and, during the ensuing fierce counter attack, successfully annihilated many of the attacking Japanese, thereby contributing materially to stopping the counter attack. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
