George C. Gill, Jr.
Corporal, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 004028 (December 26, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal George C. Gill (MCSN: 462059), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Fire Group Leader of a Rifle Squad serving with a company of the Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Fonte Hill, Guam, Marianas Islands, 25 July 1944.
Courageously leading his group in the face of heavy machine-gun and rifle fire to attack a cave-emplaced machine-gun which was holding up the advance of his company, Corporal Gill was seriously wounded in the arm and forced to return to the company command post for medical attention. Although strongly advised to remain at the post, he insisted upon rejoining his fire group and, promptly reorganizing his men for a second assault on the hostile emplacement, successfully led them against the fierce resistance from the cave until he was mortally wounded.
By his splendid leadership and courageous initiative, Corporal Gill contributed in large measure to the complete destruction of the enemy gun position, and his inspiring valor throughout the action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
