CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Holly H. Evans (MCSN: 0-7019), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Third Tank Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 25 February 1945.
In preparation for a coordinated infantry-tank-artillery attack against high ground north-east of Motoyama Airfield Number Two, Major Evans thoroughly reconnoitered the entire Division zone of action under heavy hostile fire and, on the basis of that reconnaissance, submitted detailed recommendations for the employment of his Battalion.
Undaunted by fierce enemy action, he courageously moved forward with his assault units in order to direct and control the progress of the advance. Sensing at the most critical phase of the attack the necessity of prompt and vigorous action to prevent the attack from stalling and to reorganize the remaining shattered forces, he moved on foot to the most forward tanks in the face of intense hostile fire and made an effective and timely reorganization of those tanks still on the field.
By his outstanding courage and initiative, Major Evans inspired his officers and men to continue the advance despite the almost invulnerable defense of the Japanese, and his unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
