Carl Ray Evans
Private 1st Class, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 1473 (February 22, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Carl R. Evans (MCSN: 475085), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, 17 June 1944.
During a fierce, tank-supported enemy counterattack which rendered his positions extremely dangerous, Private First Class Evans valiantly remained at his machine gun, firing until his weapon ceased to function and then directing fire of an antitank gun which resulted in the destruction of a hostile tank. Subsequently securing another machine gun at the company command post, he unhesitatingly returned to his position to continue the fight.
By his daring initiative and tireless vigilance, Private First Class Evans aided materially in the successful stemming of the enemy's devastating counterattack, and his tenacious devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
