James Franklin Dunn, Jr.
Captain, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 41644
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant James F. Dunn, Jr. (MCSN: 0-41824), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 15 March 1945.
In an effort to locate the source of heavy machine-gun fire which had pinned down his patrol during a mission to wipe out a by-passed enemy strong point, Second Lieutenant Dunn exposed his body as a target to draw fire and, although seriously wounded as a result of this heroic sacrifice, enabled his men to locate and destroy the enemy gun. His high courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
