CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Clifford W. Doggett (MCSN: 294603), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, 7 July 1944.
Skillfully servicing and firing his artillery piece while under fierce fire from Japanese small arms and machine guns, Corporal Doggett fought with aggressive determination, valiantly assisting in knocking out an enemy tank which had killed five and wounded six men in his section.
Mortally wounded in this encounter, Corporal Doggett, by his alert initiative and cool courage, had contributed essentially to the success of our vital mission on this island. His unwavering devotion to duty throughout at the risk of his own life was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
