Frederick Welborn Dodd
Sergeant, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 004209 (January 4, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Frederick W. Dodd (MCSN: 319184), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Machine-Gun Section Leader serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, during action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Guam, Marianas Islands, 21 to 25 July 1944.
On the morning of 25 July when the advance of his company was temporarily halted by the fierceness of the enemy's rifle and machine gun fire, Sergeant Dodd unhesitatingly risked his life to rescue a wounded Marine who lay exposed to the merciless barrage but was killed while performing his valiant mission.
His outstanding heroism on this occasion and his exceptional devotion to duty during many previous assault operations, carried out under the most hazardous combat conditions, reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Dodd and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
