GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 0296-295
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Graham G. Conoley (MCSN: 0-16096), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as acting Leader of an Assault Platoon of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas Islands on 22 July 1944.
Leading his platoon First Lieutenant Conoley pressed forward the attack and when the advance was halted by an enemy machine gun, personally killed a covering hostile sniper and then worked stealthily into a position from which he destroyed the enemy strong point.
Weak and suffering from a wound received during the action he refused treatment until all the other wounded men of his platoon had been evacuated and his platoon had been completely reorganized. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Conoley and the United States Naval Service.
