CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel D. Cusenbary, Jr. (MCSN: 293544), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Platoon Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during assault on Saipan, Marianas Islands on 17 June 1944.
Leading his platoon in a sector that was heavily attacked during the early morning hours by enemy tanks and infantry, Sergeant Cusenbary skillfully directed and controlled the fire of his sections. Observing that his machine guns were ineffective against the oncoming tanks, he directed his fire against the Japanese foot troops and, although some of the tanks advanced to his positions and damaged several of the guns, was able to return such effective fire upon the enemy that the became completely disorganized and withdrew. His outstanding leadership and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
