George M. Camp, Jr.
Corporal, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 43822
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal George M. Camp, Jr. (MCSN: 830603), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine-gun Squad Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 12 March 1945.
When his company was held up by severe flanking and frontal fire from hostile machine guns and rifles during an assault on the enemy's final defensive line, Corporal Camp assisted in the evacuation of numerous casualties in the immediate area. Observing two wounded Marines lying forward of the front lines where grazing enemy fire discouraged any rescue attempts, he crawled beneath the heavy fire to evacuate the two casualties.
Although severely wounded in the process of a third rescue, he made his way back to the lines where he was ordered evacuated. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
