Private 1st Class, U. S. Marine Corps

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 44533 (July 23, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Milton W. Buehrig (MCSN: 933150), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945.
When his Platoon Leader and all Non-Commissioned Officers became casualties during a fierce fire fight and hand grenade exchange, Private First Class Buehrig unhesitatingly took charge of the remaining men, notified his Company Commander and, braving the constant enemy fire, reorganized the platoon and continued the attack.
During the vicious fire fight which ensued, he exposed himself to the intense fire on three different occasions to report to his Company Commander and keep him abreast of the tactical situation.
Later, he successfully completed the reorganization and gained commanding ground before digging in his platoon for the night. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
