Ray Hurchel Buckner
Corporal, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 004251 (April 3, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ray H. Buckner (MCSN: 308663), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Platoon Guide and later as Platoon Sergeant serving with the Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during the recapture of the enemy Japanese-held Island of Guam, Marianas, from 21 July to 21 August 1944.
Although sustaining a serious leg wound from enemy rifle fire during the final assault on Mount Chachao on 28 July, Corporal Buckner refused to be evacuated until after the objective had been taken. In order that the company corpsmen might care for the more severely wounded, he courageously made his way alone to the aid station for treatment.
Despite the handicap of an extremely painful and unhealed wound, he returned to action several days later and, advancing steadfastly with his unit over long distances of rugged terrain, contributed essentially to the successful drive to sweep the Japanese from the northern end of the island until he was mortally wounded on 21 August while engaged in patrol duty.
His exceptional fortitude and selfless devotion to the fulfillment of a vital mission reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Buckner and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
