CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph B. Brown (MCSN: 294658), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, 15 June 1944.
When his platoon leader was killed and the platoon became badly disorganized shortly after dark, Sergeant Brown assumed command of the unit and organized an effective night defense. On the following morning, he rallied his men and led them in an aggressive attack eliminating a strong enemy center of resistance. His initiative, courage, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
