Jimmie F. Barnes
Private 1st Class, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 0033 (January 25, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jimmie F. Barnes (MCSN: 815503), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifleman serving with the First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Islands, on 17 September 1944.
When his squad was pinned down by close-range enemy sniper and machine gun fire during an extremely hazardous attack across densely covered jungle terrain, Private Barnes voluntarily advanced alone under the deadly fire of automatic weapons and working his way forward to a vantage point, delivered rifle fire on the Japanese crew and disabled the gun.
Although mortally wounded during the action, Private Barnes had enabled his squad to attain its objective, and his self-sacrificing spirit and valiant conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
